Type 1 Diabetes: What It Is and How We Help You Manage It

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little to no insulin, the hormone that allows glucose (sugar) from food to move out of the bloodstream and into your cells for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood instead of fueling the body. It is most often diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults, though it can appear at any age.

Common Symptoms

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Constant hunger or fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or sores

These symptoms can develop quickly, sometimes over just a few weeks. If you notice several of them together, it is worth a visit sooner rather than later.

Everyday Management

Living well with Type 1 diabetes is a daily rhythm of monitoring blood sugar, taking insulin as prescribed, and matching food and activity to your levels. Our team helps you build that rhythm through:

  • Blood glucose monitoring guidance — learning to read your numbers and know what they mean
  • Insulin education — understanding your prescribed regimen and how food, exercise, and stress affect it
  • Nutrition counseling — practical meal planning that fits your routine, not a rigid diet
  • Routine lab work — regular A1C and metabolic panels to track your progress over time
  • Ongoing check-ins — so small adjustments happen before small problems become big ones

Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented or cured, but with steady support it is very manageable. Our goal is to help you build habits that hold up in real life — at school, at work, and everywhere in between.
